Mississauga Friendship Association member Jenny recently spent an afternoon with the Kariya International Friendship Association. Jenny was a special guest at a KIFA event entitled “Lets Make Maple Cookies for Kids”. She helped the children make maple cookies. They also read an English language children’s story about Maple Syrup. It looks like the kids had a great time!
Long-time member Bette Pauli had a serious accident on July 11. While visiting a friend she fell and broke her right hip. She had surgery on the July 13th and is now recuperating at Credit Valley Hospital. Bette is having physio and is in good spirits with lots of visitors. She is looking forward to a family trip in September so she is motivated to get mobile soon. We wish her a speedy recovery!
Thanks to Stephanie for sharing her hosting experience during this year’s delegation visit from Kariya! Words from Stephanie below:
My recent experience with the delegates from Kariya was great and I would love to share a few highlights. My two guests were Yoshiro Sugiura and Hideki Yoshioka. One of the things they wanted to do was meet some Rotarians as they are Rotary members in Kariya. We had a great time with members of the Lakeshore Rotary Club and it was amazing that two members spoke Japanese and one has now become a member of the MFA!
That night we had a wonderful time at the Glenerin Inn at our Welcome Reception. It was especially memorable as Mayor McCallion was in attandence and said that she hoped to visit Kariya again in 2014 and that she considers the twinning one of her accomplishments.
The next day we visisted David and Melissa Smith, two members that had both stayed with Hideki’s father in Kariya. They checked out their tree house, zip line, trampoline and they loved shooting off beebee guns! Being introduced on the stage at Canada Day, a day in Niagara Falls, teaching 80 kids about Japanese culture and an amazing Farewell BBQ at Councillor Starr’s house helped round out a whirlwind visit. As always I get more then I ever give and am happy to have two more good friends in Kariya.
A special post from this year’s delegate Pav Gidda. Thanks to Pav for sharing her photos and experience from her trip to Kariya!
Words from Pav: These pictures are from our home stay. My host family (the Takayama Family) hosted for the very first time and they said they would do it again. We had a special bond and got along with each other very well. If we ever had any challenges understanding each other we would use the iTranslate app on the iPhone to convey our message; however Minori and Yoshishige did quite well understanding english! The last picture is a picture of clams as I went Clam Digging during one of my free days…that was an amazing experience!
