The Mississauga Friendship Association had the honour of once again welcoming a lovely delegation of students from Kariyakita High School. Ten students including their wonderful leaders Takanori Ito and Makiko Yamamoto, shared Japanese culture with a variety of groups around Mississauga including St. Francis Xavier, Steven Lewis Secondary School and Greater Toronto Language School – an international English school. MFA members along with friends and family had the pleasure of watching KKHS students deliver a beautiful presentation on Japan which included a traditional tea ceremony, and an interactive calligraphy lesson.
One of the key activities of the MFA is facilitating a homestay program for a few days each summer for ten citizen delegates from Kariya.
There is currently an URGENT need for host families to continue this program.
Hosting is a great way to learn about Japanese culture, make a new friend and help promote Mississauga and Canada. Host families must be able to provide a bedroom for approximately 5 nights, transportation, either by car or bus, to various activities and be willing to take your guest on an outing on the “free day.”
This year the delegation will arrive July 6 and depart on July 11.
Host families are not paid but do receive a number of benefits including various lunches, dinners and an expenses paid trip to Niagara Falls. Please consider hosting so we can continue to provide this activity to our sister city citizens.

Student Delegation To Visit From Kariya Kita High School
Ten students and two teachers from Kariya Kita High School will visit Mississauga for a cultural exchange from March 19 to 26, 2016.
The MFA has helped to develop a varied and interesting itinerary for the students including a trip to Niagara Falls, maple programming at Bradley Museum and opportunities to showcase their culture with a local girl guiding group.
The students will visit schools from three different school systems. They will spend one day at their twin school, Stephen Lewis Secondary School, as well as a day at St. Francis Xavier Secondary School and the Greater Toronto Language School (GTLS) which is a private ESL school.
Thanks to everyone who helped to make these opportunities happen!
On March 23, the delegates will showcase their culture at our MFA social meeting. This will take place from 7 to 9 pm at Frank McKechnie Community Centre, 310 Bristol Road East. Please plan to attend to support the students and give them a warm Mississauga welcome.
Kariya Park Beautification Project
The City of Mississauga has invited the Mississauga Friendship Association to participate in a community beautification project to improve Kariya Park. Two murals will be painted on the doors of the utility sheds featuring cherry blossom/garden motifs. The murals will be drawn by City staff onto the buildings and volunteers will use paint brushes, rollers and latex paint to complete the designs. No experience is necessary. Anyone interested should mark their calendar for Saturday, May 28 from 8:30am to 12:30pm. If you are interested in helping out, please let Stephanie know.
